What does social media mean to YOU?

The latest project I had to work on was a video where I had to ask different age groups what they thought about the internet and how did they use it.

Do they use facebook, Skype, Google and WHY?

After interviewing different people, I noticed that each person has its own agenda. Each person uses social media for different purposes.

Lynn Mourad, a 9 year old, was asked why did she use the internet at her age.

Lynn mostly uses the internet for school, when she has a research to do. She mostly uses wikipedia and google. Even at a very young age, kids rely on social media for work.

Maya Mourad, an 11 year old, also uses the internet for work and studying but also for entertainment. She used Facebook for a while, but has now deleted it. Maya thinks you have no privacy whatsoever on Facebook and had rather delete it than people hacking her account.

Both Lynn and Maya use Skype for the only purpose of calling their father who lives abroad. They use it everyday.

Sara Giusti, a 19 year old, has little use of skype. From time to time, she uses it to also call her father who lives abroad. But Sara is more Facebook oriented. She finds it be fun.

May Hitti, a parent, uses skype a lot. She finds it very useful. May has been introduced to social media a little bit more than 10 years ago. She finds it extremely practical and makes everything easier.

“I wish we had internet a long time ago,” May said.

She also uses Facebook but very rarely. Her only purpose of using this site is simply to be in touch with her daughters and see what they have been up to.

As you see, Age matters when it comes to internet.

Younger kids usually have access to the internet simply for some basic research for school work. But they also use Skype to communicate with the outside world.

Teenagers mostly use the internet for entertainment. Facebook for instance: pictures, videos, tagging, Posting on walls… etc.

Parents usually rely on the internet to stay in touch with their kids, friends and families.

Read the article.. its pretty interesting ===» http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/27321/facebook-will-end-on-march-15th/

Is it true?

Rumors has it that facebook is going to SHUT down on march 15.

According to some, the reasons why Zuckerberg wants to shut the site is because running facebook has become too “stressful”.

But many claim that the rumor is false!

The interesting part of this situation is if facebook does shut down, how would people react? Will it be for the best or should facebook keep working?

Do I know you?

How can anyone be sure that whomever they talk to on facebook or on any online website are actually real?

Or they are who they say they are?

Many questions should be asked….

Yesterday in class, we watched this amazing documentary (catfish) about this guy, Nev, who met this young artist on facebook. Her name was Abby. For months, they would talk on the phone, exchange emails, etc…

Then he got to meet Abby’s sister, Megan. Nev and Meg got to talk more and started liking each other. One day, Nev noticed something was wrong about Megan. He then decided to investigate and to go meet her in person.

To his surprise, there was no Megan, Abby was not an artist and it was all the doing of the mother. In fact, she created a fake account, used pictures of someone else, and pretended this whole time to be a 19 year old teenager.

Meeting people online for the 1st time might be risky. You can never be sure that the person your talking to is saying the truth or is truthful about his/her identity. Anyone can lie, use other pictures, pretend to be someone their not.

The internet is a great resource to lie and hide real identities. Especially if you have never seen that person live.

I think meeting people offline, is a better way to know a person. Even if you meet the person for the 1st time you might not figure them out directly but at least you’re sure they actually exist.

Gowalla fever

Gowalla is a copy cat of foursquare…

Its the same concept but has more options. Wherever you are, you check in and show your friends where you are, what you are doing and who your hanging out with.

But now with gowalla you can actually take pictures of the place ur in and post it on your profile!

Can you say privacy?

I personally prefer foursquare because its faster and easier to use. With gowalla it takes me forever to check in!

Since in Lebanon the connection fails all the time, its a longer process to check in and take pictures. But the idea of taking pictures is smart and more interesting.

Welcome stalkers to my private life…

Who can compete

Marc zuckerberg became very famous and the richest youngest man in the world because of one simple creation : FACEBOOK.

I would understand if others were to try and become as famous. But facebook works and in my opinion always will. It will always be the first social medium that will rule all others.

Still, there still are some pretty talented people in this world that will one day invent a blog or a new social medium.

Youssef Kanaan, an engineering student, created his own blog not long ago.  He got to create a comic page on his blog, which I find very entertaining.

Kanaan is also thinking of creating a new site that rates restaurants but he wouldnt be the only one to post articles. He wants this site to be public and whoever tried a new place, such as a pub, a club or a restaurant, they would log on and write their own review.

I think there is something very interesting about that idea. If he really goes into it it would be smart and probably famous in Lebanon.
